Seminar on Family Life and the Rights of the Child in the European Convention on Human Rights

On the 30th of November and 1st of December 2016 the AIRE Centre, the Judicial Training Centre of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Judicial Training Centre of Republika Srpska, with support of the British Embassy in Sarajevo, organised a seminar in Hotel Bristol, Sarajevo.

The event was part of AIRE Centre’s three year project ‘Strengthening the Judiciary of Bosnia and Herzegovina for EU Integration’. The topic of this seminar was ‘Family Life and Rights of the Child in the European Convention on Human rights’ and key problems in relation to interference with these rights in BiH law and practice. The aim of the seminar was to bring together legal professionals in BiH to meet and discuss the reforms necessary to tackle the above issues and also to close the gap between theory and practice, thus assisting BiH in its path to European integration. Over 50 participants, including 35 judges and prosecutors from throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) and 15 advisors from the Court of BIH and the Constitutional Court of BIH, attended.

The event was opened by Ms Biljana Braithwaite, Manager for the Rule of Law Programme for the Western Balkans at the AIRE Centre, and included participations from inter alia Radoslav Marjanovic, assistant director for the Centre for education of judges and prosecutors of Federation of BiH; Elma Veledar Arifagic, legal expert; Ms Jasminka Dzumhur, Ombudsman for Human Rights for BiH; Nikolina Katic, Legal Advisor to the Government Agent of the Republic of Croatia; Nuala Mole, founder and senior lawyer at the AIRE Centre; Professor Dzamna Duman from the Faculty of Law in Sarajevo University.
