The Minister of Justice of Montenegro Bojan Božović is on an official visit to the United Kingdom. On the first day, the delegation, consisting of key representatives from the Ministry and theAIRE Centre, met with the President of the UK Supreme Court, Lord Reed, and the Chief Executive, Vicky Fox. The meeting focused on exchanging knowledge and practices to improve judicial independence, enhance court transparency, and improve public understanding of the judiciary’s role.
“The insights we have gained from the UK Supreme Court are essential for Montenegro as we strive to align our judiciary with European standards. Strengthening the independence and transparency of our courts is crucial for building trust and advancing the rule of law”, stated Minister Božović.
“This visit is significant for strengthening the principles of the rule of law in Montenegro, in line with the most important international standards. By learning from the established practices of the United Kingdom, we further reinforce our commitment to European integration and Montenegro’s judicial reforms”, said Biljana Braithwaite, Director of the AIRE Centre’s Western Balkans Programme.
The delegation also visited the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), where they met with Jamie Harrison, Deputy Director General of the LCIA. The discussion focused on improving the legal framework for arbitration in Montenegro and promoting arbitration courts as key mechanisms for resolving commercial disputes.
“Today’s discussions with the LCIA aim to position Montenegro as a credible center for resolving commercial disputes. This meeting focused on critical issues of building legal infrastructure that inspires trust and attracts international cooperation”, concluded Vanja Radević, Project Manager at the AIRE Centre.
The day’s visits also included a meeting with Gary Born, Chair of the International Arbitration Practice Group and partner at the law firm Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. Born is a renowned global expert in international commercial arbitration and litigation.
The working visit was organised by the AIRE Centre with the support of the UK Government as part of a project aimed at improving arbitration procedures in Montenegro. The project focuses on strengthening the legal framework for arbitration through a comparative analysis of regional and international experiences. These activities are part of the AIRE Centre’s longstanding efforts to promote the rule of law in Montenegro in accordance with European standards.
