Invitation to the webinar on gender-based violence in healthcare
November 22, 2024

The AIRE Centre invites you to the webinar “In the shadows: Prosecution of gender-based violence in healthcare”. Through the analysis of real-life cases and addresses from experts, this webinar aims to empower legal professionals and other relevant stakeholders to better understand, prevent, and prosecute these often-overlooked human rights violations.

This webinar is designed for judges, prosecutors, lawyers, and other legal professionals, as well as civil society actors, human rights activists, journalists, and students. The translation is available in English and Bosnian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Serbian. Prior registration is not required.

The webinar will be held on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 13:00 to 15:00 (CET) via Zoom. Join the webinar via this link.

Key discussion topics will include the difficulty in prosecuting these cases, including obstetric, medical, and sexual violence cases, focusing on barriers victims face in accessing justice, and the crucial role of the judiciary in ensuring accountability. The discussion will centre around real-life cases in Western Balkans, and particularly seeking to examine the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights and standards established by the European Convention on Human Rights. The webinar will also touch on the human dimension, highlighting the psychological and emotional toll on survivors, as a result of various forms of violence during obstetric/gynaecological medical care.

The webinar will be led by experts:

  • Kateřina Šimáčková, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights
  • Marina Mijatović, Attorney at Law and Member of Parliament at the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia
  • Arduana Pribinja, Journalist at Al Jazeera Balkans

  • Sonja Tošković, Executive Director of the Belgrade Centre for Human Rights
  • Amila Tatarević, President of the Association Baby Steps

The organisation of the webinar is supported by the Government of the United Kingdom. For more information about the AIRE Centre’s Western Balkans Programme, visit the official website.
